RAILPROF
MEASUREMENT OF RAIL WELDS AND CORRUGATION

New software release for RAILPROF PDA
Version 4.1 of the RAILPROF PDA software has been released.
This version contains a built-in ftp client for wireless transfer of measurement files to a central PC.

Desktop software modified for assessment of grinding work according to German standards

A new version of the RAILPROF PDA software is released with the following new features: built-in ftp client for wireless transfer of measurement files. The files are stored on the ftp server in the directory \\Job\Welder. At any time the welder can push the button ‘Send FTP’ to send all the measuring files not yet transmitted. A copy of the files remains on the SD card of the PDA. Furthermore additional speed classes have been added, especially in the lower speed range for metro and tram applications. The third point is that the RAILPROF will be kept awake as long as the operator is working in the measuring menu on the PDA. Normally the RAILPROF is switches off after 10 minutes of not being used.

We also offer a ruggedized Symbol MC70 PDA with industrial specifications and GPRS.

MC35 with built-in GPS

RAILPROF is controlled by a Pocket PC (PDA). Vertical and lateral geometry are measured simultaneously. The measuring results are automatically sent to the PDA, which carries out all the calculations like filtering and computing the first derivative of the vertical geometry. This is in accordance with the new force-based weld standards of ProRail, the Dutch Rail Infra Manager.

RAILPROF is a tool for accurately measuring longitudinal rail geometry. Low weight (6 kg for RAILPROF 1000) and robustness could be realized through the use of high tech materials developed in space technology.

Background information on new rail geometry standards

Taylor made Flight Case

Freight information:
- Total weight of flight case, RAILPROF, PDA and
   carton protection box: approximately 19 kg;
- Dimensions: approximately 137 x 43 x 17.5 cm.

Recently weld registration software has been developed by which also RAILPROF measurement files can be transferred wirelessly via GPRS. For details click here.

Templates can be created for each measuring job via the 'Setup' menu. The values of the active template are used when the measuring process is started. After tapping the command measure the values of the template are shown and can be altered. If the weld is measured again or a new weld is measured the previous values are kept.

For Glued Insulated Joints (GIJ) a special feature is available to clip out the part between the rail ends at the joint. The eddy current transducer sees this area as a large deviation. When the correction is set to 'Yes', the central 10 mm of the measurement is removed and replaced by values linearly interpolated between the measured values at both ends.

Applications:

 Checking and acceptance of flash butt welds, thermit welds and glued insulated joints;

 Positioning of rails before welding;

 Production of glued insulated joints;

 Assessment of corrugations;

 Monitoring progress of grinding process;

 Acceptance of grinding work;

 Acceptance of rails for longitudinal geometry, including straightness of rail ends.

Special Windows based desktop software is provided to download the measurement data into a PC for viewing, editing and printing.

The desktop software now offers the possibility to select records on the basis of the quality index QI. Via the find icon a screen is opened in which a choice can be made for QI Top, QI Hor, or both. The selection value is default 1.00, but the user can assign any other value. After OK the screen at the bottom left shows just the selected records, which can be moved now.

The software offers printing facilities to generate one integrated report for a series of measurements. In the above example the reports for Top Assessment are selected and can be printed as one pdf file with the free software Primopdf (http://www.primopdf.com/downloads/FreePrimoSetup.exe). Alternatively download from http://www.esveld.com/Download/RAILPROF/PDF_printer/FreePrimoSetup.exe.
Users of Acrobat 7.0 should install update 7.0.5 (

Main characteristics of the RAILPROF

  1. Weight: less than 7 kg;

  1. Length: 116 cm;

  1. measurements controlled by PDA through wireless communication via Bluetooth;

  1. Measuring length: 1,000 mm in accordance with the CEN standards for weld geometry; sampling interval 5 mm;

  1. Measuring time: about  10 sec;

  1. Data transfer to PDA and analysis: about 6 sec;

  1. Data storage: unlimited on PDA internal memory or Secure Digital (SD) card;

  1. Data transfer to desktop PC via Active Sync, Windows Mobility Center, memory card, or network (GPRS, or wifi);

  1. Presentation of measurements on desktop PC via Windows menu. Easy to generate reports in, for instance, pdf format;

  1. High accuracy at ambient temperatures between - 5 șC and + 40 șC (PDA normally 0 șC to + 40 șC):
    1. Vertical geometry: +/- 0.030 mm;
    2. Lateral geometry: +/- 0.050 mm;
