We have recently developed software to
send weld registration information and measurement files from a
pocket pc to a central computer via GPRS, based on building block
software from Pocket PC Creations in Australia. Switch or straight track
can be selected and various other parameter. The last file measured
by the
RAILPROF can automatically be added, or alternatively any
other measuring file can be selected. Also the GPS position can be
determined via the built-in GPS receiver. With the built-in camera a
picture can be taken and added to the menu. The operator can add
remarks and if some authorization is required for starting the work
this can be done by specifying the name and providing a signature.
The information can then be transferred via GPRS to the server in
the office. A Microsoft Access database was developed in which all data is stored. This database is linked to the internal database of the server. In the Access database queries and selections can be made, for instance per project, work order or welder and the information can be generated necessary for getting approval of the client. Not only data can be transferred from PPC to server, but also from server to PPC. This makes it possible to prepare as much as possible in the office so that only the missing data should be filled in in the field. This also allows for doing first the weld registration and in a later stage carrying out the RAILPROF measurements. As the welders normally work at
night, when the office is closed, the session data for a particular
PPC can be prepared before and then marked for sending to that PPC.
As soon as the PPC comes online the session data are automatically
downloaded in the PPC. |

In this window all relevant information is
available for the client to make a final assessment of the weld and give
approval for acceptance. Automatic sending of sessions to PPC The sessions marked for sending on the server are automatically downloaded as soon as the PPC comes online. This is done on the server by marking the relevant record (in this example record 35). For the target the right PPC should be selected. Once that PPC, MC35_ECS, comes online the record (session) is automatically downloaded and then can be altered by the operator. After this is completed the record can be sent back and then replaces the previous version on the server.
